How to Choose a Perfume for Someone Else
So, you want to buy a fragrance for your someone special. First of all, may we commend you on your choice of gift. Secondly, while it’s not the easiest thing to buy — a scent will have different emotional ties for different people — the payoff of getting someone a perfume they truly love can be immense, as it is a gift that is enjoyed long after the birthday, anniversary or other occasion.
So how do you choose a perfume for someone else?
We all have personal preferences and they aren’t that complicated to understand and map out. Fragrances are classified by family types according to their structures.
There are four families of fragrances.
Chances are that the person you want to choose a perfume for has a preferred type of fragrance too, so research what she/he usually wears.
If you know two or three of their favourite fragrances, then you should have enough material to get an idea about their scent profile.
Where to start?
We strongly suggest going to a specialist perfume store where the sales assistants are able to take their time with you. In department stores there’s a lot more pressure; sales assistants are given sales targets and are in competition with each other, plus the product offering might not be as deep as you require. All the staff in specialty stores are highly trained.
Any specialist perfumer should ask questions:
- Who is the perfume for?
- Is the person you’re shopping for traditional? Are they a healthy, outdoorsy person, a spice lover, or exciting and vibrant? What are their favourite colours? Are they sporty?
- What perfume do they currently wear?
- Do they like warm, spicy smells, or cooler, fresh fragrances?
All of these things are relevant. What they are doing is putting together a perfume portrait of the person. From that they can pick out three perfumes for you to try on your own skin.
Trying a perfume for your boyfriend or girlfriend on your own skin makes sense because your other half finds your natural smell attractive, which means that you’re likely to have complimentary body chemistry. That would always be a better indicator than the sales person in the shop.
